What they've done with the desktop is bring most features that GNOME packs into the Activities overview, into their own modules. By default, you have a dock, that can extend to the screen edges or not, you get a big applications launcher that opens as a window, not in full screen, and a dedicated WOrkspaces view, plus a launcher. That's the good thing: YOU decide. All these tools definitely fill parts of the same function, and so you can pick which ones you want to keep, and which ones you don't. Same goes with the applications grid: you can open it with the Applications button in the top left, or the dock icon, or set the super key to open it. It opens in a window, so it doesn't block out your whole screen, and it's got a very nice folder implementation: instead of having folders inline with the rest of the apps, each folder you create has its own tab in the bottom, so it's way easier to navigate to one, although you do lose the drag and drop reorganization of apps, or folder creation. You need to click the create folder icon to create one. You also get a launcher, which is probably the less accomplished tool implemented here .It can also search through files, recent documents, browse the filesystem, run a terminal command, perform calculations, do a web search, or even run an sh command. Gestures on PopOS are a mixed bag. First, apart from the virtual desktop switching, they're not 1:1 gestures. Second, the gestures can't be configured. There's also a very handy restore partition being created automatically, and you can update it straight from the settings. PopOS has a great system wide feature: it lets you switch from a regular window manager, with floating windows, to a tiling window manager that can be operated from the keyboard entirely. It's right there, up top in the panel. Just press SUper + Y, and all your windows automatically tile themselves in a sensible way. There, you can either the mouse to resize them, stack them on top of another to create tabs, or move them to a different position. Or use the keyboard to do the same, all shortcuts are explained right in the indicator panel. PopOS uses the PopSHOP, a graphical app based on the elementary OS appCenter, instead of GNOME Software.PopOS adds their own repos with a bunch of applications that aren't in ubuntu's repos, or are available as snap packages on Ubuntu, and they ship with flathub out of the box. PopOS also generally has more up to date internals, with more recent kernels than Ubuntu, more up to date mesa drivers, they don't limit themselves to just security updates, they do pull in the latest stable versions of a lot of the software stack. It's also the only distro I used that has a good way of switching between integrated graphics and dedicated GPus on hybrid laptops.
Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS has landed! Pop is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution that sports a really nice GNOME desktop environment with many custom modifications created by the Pop team. In fact, Pop might be the best GTK-based desktop Linux distro available right now. Move over, Ubuntu. There's a new king. I very rarely review a Gnome distro as it's my least favourite desktop environment. But what System 76 is doing with their Cosmic Desktop has made me want to take a closer look, especially as there is talk of them developing their own rust-based environment. My overall impression is that POP_OS is a vast improvement over vanilla Gnome and moving in a very positive direction - I would even say it's Gnome as it should have been right from the start. So a broadly positive review. I'm not convinced fully yet, but I would choose this over any other Gnome distro out there at the moment. I hope you enjoy the video :-) If you enjoy my channel and/or find it useful, you can support me in a number of ways. 1. If you would like to become a Patron, my page is here: 🤍 2.

Second, it will be written in Rust, from scratch. Third, it will follow the FreeDesktop specification, so it will be interoperable with other desktops. They also aim for more stability, and less resource usage than GNOME, with greater configuration options. This is important, because it means that PopOs is going the same route as Unity did in the day: only write a new shell, but don't spend too much resources on re-writing everything around it, apps, window managers, settings panels, etc... What will it look like? Basically like what today's Cosmic desktop looks like: dock on the botton, top panel, launcher to open apps and search... It makes sense to not disturb user's habits and not re-make the whole experience. It will also have the auto tiling features PopOS users already enjoy. The desktop won't be here for 22.04, that's for sure, and I personally wouldn't expect it until 2023. But why create yet another desktop environment? Won't that split development efforts and hurt the Linux desktop in general? Let's get that out of the way: this is a very common misconception, but it's not how things work. You can't always make your own vision for something coexist with the vision the original project has. Sometimes, the two are incompatible. In that case, you have 2 options: you create your own vision, and start working on it, or you forget your vision, and stop working on a project whose goals you no longer share. Basically, if you don't fork, or create your project, you'd stop contributing anyway, so no one loses manpower in the end. Now, why would PopOS and System76 feel that they can't keep using GNOME? This is obviously a move to try and not be impacted as much by the GNOME planned changes. GNOME is moving in its own direction, that PopOS hasn't really liked all that much in the past, and it doesn't seem that relations are improving, as incendiary blog posts and tweets keep being fired on a regular basis from GNOME contributors and System76 employees. PopOS had already made a first move by renaming their shell "Cosmic", when they decided to ship a variety of extensions out of the box on their distro, to implement a vision closer to what they'd like their users to have. Still, it seems that these extensions aren't enough: they are in general kinda hacky, can be broken with every major release of GNOME, and have no chance of ever getting upstreamed, so they'll be a burden on System76 for however long they'd decide to keep using them. Now, my opinion about this is pretty positive. I think it's great that PopOS is developing their own desktop. I thought it was great when Ubuntu developed Unity. I think it's awesome that we have multiple desktop choices on Linux. Basically, I think that each distribution should have its own specific "thing" that makes it unique, or it doesn't really have a reason to exist. elementary OS has its own desktop environment and appcenter, Fedora has all the latest tech, Arch is the most bleeding edge distro, Gentoo is super optimized for your hardware, and a lot of other distros bring their own more minor spins on these bases, that serve a purpose.

I'm taking a quick look at the recently released Pop!_OS 21.04 with their COSMIC desktop. COSMIC is a set of customizations that makes GNOME much more palatable. In fact, Pop!_OS COSMIC might be the best GNOME-based Linux distro. It could even be argued that Pop!_OS might be the best desktop Linux distro period.
